What
sets YOU apart from the rest?
Whether you are in the "Fortune
500 club", a Small Business owner, or even new to computers,
a website can provide instant access to your information, products,
or services 24 hours a day! That's great, but a successful
site will have more!
Unless you are a pioneer in your field,
you probably have some competition. If you want people to
come to Your Site instead of theirs, you should
think about offering something that can only be found at Your
Site. This helps to define your site, and makes
it easier to market, etc. So ask yourself: what sets
you apart from the rest? Such as:
- your products, services, support is
better than your competition
- maybe you have a new idea you want to
share, or try to market
- or maybe it's your hobbies, interests,
coming events, clubs, etc.
Isolate your information into a unique message or slogan that
sets you apart from the rest (ie. We make the Best Widgets).
The goal is to create a niche, to help to distinguish your
website from others that are similar. You want to give people
something to remember you by, a reason to come back, and refer
you to a friend.
PLAN
Your Project
Too many people jump into creating their first website
with no idea of what they want to achieve. This may be okay
if you are learning how to build one yourself, but when paying
for a project, those changes can add extra cost.
It's best to plan your project before contacting a Design Company,
and try to stick with your decisions as much as possible. A good
plan saves you time and money.
These are some "key
elements" you will need in your
PLAN -
For a new
website or an upgrade,
ask yourself:
- What is this website for - its' main purpose?
- What do you want to do with it - your "vision"
for it upon completion?
- How should it look,
what style do you want, what colors to use?
- Who will supply the content
- text, graphics, logos, other materials?
- How soon do you want it done - when do you need it?
Preparing
your Content and "look"
- Take your vision
and outline it - dividing
it into main categories. They might be - Products,
Pricing, Description, About Us - These are your
Main-links
- Assign keywords or short phrases to break down
your Main links & large topics into sections.
They will become sub-pages
& sub-links for that
topic
- Create content from each
keyword.
Use a simple text editor such as Notepad, or Word. This
is only a rough draft.
- Decide on how your pages should look.
If you don't know, get on the Internet and surf around.
Look for sites similar to yours and write down any ideas.
Bookmark the websites that best describe the
"look".
- During this investigative period you should also be refining
your content, honing it to convey as clear and concise a
message as possible
Assembling
the Pieces
Now you mix your content
and unique message,
(with links to all
your keywords) into pages
that have a uniform "look",
that will achieve the vision
you had in your Plan - Whew!
